Social Studies - Grade Five
This two-week social studies unit focuses on the cultural and physical geography of South America. There are two main phases of the lesson: whole class instruction and practice and group projects. Students are divided into 13 groups, one for each country in South America. Each group completes introductory activities based on a specific country, including compass rose activities and a physical feature and a collaborative mapping activity. Phase two begins with each partner or trio group choosing a project to complete from a choice board. Students work on their projects each day while the instructor uses the Smart Board to assess prior knowledge with short, daily activities. Finally, the unit ends with project presentations. |

Ohio's Historic Native Americans
|
Social Studies - Grade Four
Students analyze the Ohio Historic Native Americans by participating in small group discussions and completing a graphic organizer regarding cultural traditions. Students then use these materials to create a bio poem based on Ohio Native American cultures and traditions studied in class. This integrated lesson ties in the ELA standard on character traits. (Literacy.RL.4.3) Students can choose to share their poems with the class. link: Green Corn Dance (video)
