Native American Drumming: Geometric Measurement
Mathematics and Social Studies
Integrated Lesson: Grade 4 This is a one to two day lesson that incorporates concepts from both mathematics and social studies. Students use prior knowledge from historic Native Americans from the social studies classroom as well as introductory concepts regarding protractor use and angle measure to create Native American drums. After a short review on Native American culture, students engage in collaborative learning to practice geometry skills. Once ready, students use drum kits and protractors to create real Native American drums. Group drumming exercises follow, and the lesson commences with a whole-class discussion and exit slip.

Calculating Volume
Mathematics: Grade 5
This one-day lesson provides a hands-on introduction to the concept of volume and capacity. The lesson asks students to compare and contrast area and volume, as well as two-dimensional and three-dimensional figures by participating in a stations exercise. Students will tightly fill various containers with linking or Unifix cubes to count volume, comparing the volumes of different containers and recording their findings on a worksheet. Students will also learn to create a base of linking cubes, and stack several bases to show the additive qualities of area. Finally, students will use a ruler to measure the length, width, and height in order to calculate volume. Students will describe how these different methods to find volume relate to one another. The lesson ends with a group discussion based on essential questions of the lesson.
